The City of Knoxville is seeking an experienced and qualified individual to join the executive leadership team of the Knoxville Police Department as the Deputy Chief of Professional Standards.

Knoxville, Tennessee is a dynamic and diverse community of over 190,000 residents within 104 square miles. The City serves as the core of the greater metropolitan area of nearly 900,000 people.

The city is proud of its diversity and has a vibrant cultural scene that includes local theatre, music, art, dining, and major events and festivals. Some of the most visited areas include Downtown Knoxville and its iconic Market Square and Old City, attractions including Zoo Knoxville, numerous museums, event and sporting venues, and shopping destinations. Knoxville has an international reputation as an outdoor adventure destination, with many miles of biking, hiking, kayaking, and walking trails as well as beautiful and plentiful parks, lakes, and waterways. Knoxville is just minutes away from Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Knoxville is home to several universities and colleges, trade schools, and adult education programs. The University of Tennessee, the State’s flagship campus, lies in the city’s core, and many residents are proud supporters of the University of Tennessee Volunteers, OneKnox Soccer Club, the Knoxville Ice Bears, and the Knoxville Smokies minor league baseball team, which will soon play in a new downtown Knoxville stadium.

The Knoxville Police Department has around 500 full-time employees with an authorized strength of 416 sworn officers.

The Deputy Chief of Professional Standards position is appointed by the Chief of Police. In that role, the Deputy Chief of Professional Standards oversees the Professional Standards Bureau of the Knoxville Police Department. In addition to overseeing all internal investigations, the Deputy Chief of Professional Standards is responsible for assessing the department’s training, policies, and practices to ensure that the organization operates in line with 21st century best practices.

A Juris Doctor from a college or university accredited by a C.H.E.A. recognized agency is required. Experience in executive level work in oversight of law enforcement, extensive knowledge of public safety, oversight and auditing work, and experience with enhancing community engagement and using data to advocate for policy changes are preferred qualifications.
