The City of Abilene, Kansas is a full-service municipal government located in north central Kansas between Salina and Junction City, Kansas. The City has a population of about 6,800 people living in an area of about ten square miles. The assessed valuation of the community is slightly more than $54 million. Conveniently located on Interstate 70, Abilene is home to a diverse economy that includes major employers such as Russell Stover Candies, Inc., Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc.'s Land Pride Division, Rawhide Portable Corrals, Inc., Thunderstruck, Inc., Van Diest Supply, Inc., Memorial Health System, and USD 435. Abilene is also the county seat of Dickinson County, Kansas.
Abilene is organized as a Commission-Manager form of government. The governing body, comprised of five at-large elected officials serving for four year terms, establishes the policy of the municipal government. The Mayor serves as the "first among equals" and presides over the City Commission at meetings. The governing body appoints a City Manager who manages the day-to-day affairs of the municipal government, including the supervision of the municipality's management staff. The City Manager serves at the pleasure of the governing body.
The City of Abilene provides many basic public services to include: law enforcement, municipal court, animal control, planning and zoning, building inspections, fire protection, water and sewer services, street maintenance, park maintenance, recreation programming, tourism and community promotion, economic development, and general administration.

PAID LEAVE: 10 paid holidays and one floater holiday each year. VACATION LEAVE: Accrued at a rate of 80 hours per year for first five years and then based on graduated accrual schedule following completion of six-month training period. SICK LEAVE: Accrues at one day per each full month of service. HEALTH INSURANCE: $1,000 deductible plan with City paying 74% of plan premium. PRESCRIPTIONS AND DENTAL: Included in health insurance plan. VISION: Employees may elect to participate in a vision plan. RETIREMENT: The City participates in KP&F pension program administered by the State of Kansas.
