Benefits
The starting wage of a Patrol Officer Recruit is $23.97/hr. Lateral Officers start at $25.18/hr or $26.43/hr, depending on experience and qualifications. Max hourly wage for officers of $33.26/hr is reached at the end of five years. These figures do not include the 20.5 hours/month holiday bank, overtime, uniform maintenance allowance, specialty assignment pay, or certification incentives.
The department also offers a Police Proficiency Incentive Program which offers additional pay incentives ranging from 4% to 14% depending on achievement levels. Achievement levels are based on DPSST certifications, community service hours, continued college education classes or degrees, satisfactory annual performance evaluations, and completion of an annual physical fitness evaluation.

Shift overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate of pay. Compensation for court time during off-duty hours is paid at the overtime rate with a four hour minimum guarantee.
Compensation for training time during off-duty hours is paid at the overtime rate with a three hour minimum guarantee.
The City of Bend reimburses tuition and book expenses for all employees enrolled in accredited university or college courses with prior authorization.
After 1 year of service, officers are credited with 80 hours of vacation and earn 10 hours of vacation per month. After 4 years of service, vacation is earned at 12 hours/month. After 9 years of service, vacation time increases to 14 hours/month. Officers can earn up to 19 hours of vacation time per month.
Sick leave accrues at the rate of 8 hours per month to a maximum bank of 2000 hours. If less than 48 hours of sick leave are used per calendar year, the employee can choose to maintain the unused sick leave for future use and potential credit towards PERS retirement benefits, can transfer the unused sick leave to vacation time, or receive pay for the unused sick leave.
Bend Police Officers are enrolled in a retirement plan through the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). 457 deferred compensation plans are available through the City of Bend.
