The City of Fairbanks is located in the heart of Alaska's Interior on the banks of the Chena River in the Tanana Valley.
The City has a population of 31,182 residents, and serves as the seat of government for the Fairbanks North Star Borough, which comprises a total population of 87,650.
The Fairbanks Police Department has an authorized strength of 51, which includes 48 sworn officers and three civilian support personnel.
We utilize state of the art equipment and technology including in car computer dispatch and digital evidence.
Promotional opportunities include Detective, sergeant, and Lieutenant.
Special units include bicycle / foot patrol, motorcyclr unit, DUI / Traffic enforcement, Tactical Police Team, K9 unit, School Resource Officer, Drug Enforcement unit, Weed and Seed Officer, and a Snowmachine Safety program.
Company History
April 19, 1904, Pat Whaler chosen as Town Constable
September 15, 1904, Edgar Wickersham is appointed as the first Chief of Police
January 12, 1905, Jack J. Buckley is hired as the first police officer
November 2, 1908, Chief Alvin Miller the first officer killed in the line of duty in Fairbanks when he is shot and killed by a woman who barricaded herself in a room.
1967, Officer Chuck Ward and "Zipper" became Alaska's first K9 unit.
1976 Fairbanks Police form the Tactical Police Team, the first SWAT styled special operations unit in Alaska.
1978 Fairbanks Police form a Traffic Unit.
January 1, 1998 Officer John "Kevin" Lamm is shot and killed in the line of duty.
May 15, 2002 the Fairbanks Police move into the current Police Station.
