The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) consists of about 5600 employees, with about 3300 commissioned officers. This number fluctuates, as LVMPD hires 45 new police officer recruits 10 months out of the year for a total of 450 new police officers. Newly hired Police Officers attend a 24 week police academy, followed by 19 weeks of Field Training.
LVMPD also operates the Clark County Detention Center where almost 800 of the commissioned officers work. These Corrections Officers are hired and trained for that specific position. Newly hired Corrections Officers attend a 16 week corrections academy, followed by 8 weeks of field training.
LVMPD is a combined city and county police agency. The jurisdiction for LVMPD encompasses about 7,600 square miles. The overwhelming majority of the population is within the Las Vegas Valley area and most officers are assigned within this area.
LVMPD is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA), the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/ Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB), and the American Correctional Association/ Commission on Accreditation for Corrections (ACA/CAC).

Company History
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is a combination of the former City of Las Vegas Police Department and the former Clark County Sheriffs' Department. This consolidation occurred in 1973. Prior to the consolidation, both agencies operated independently within the Las Vegas Valley. Upon consolidation, the Sheriff of Clark County was positioned as the head law enforcement officer over all officers in LVMPD. Most people commonly refer to LVMPD as simply "Metro."
