McNeese State University is a public university located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in the United States. Founded in 1939 as a junior college, McNeese experienced growth due to economic activity in the region. It adopted its present name in 1970.
McNeese is part of the University of Louisiana System and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Master's University. U.S. News and World Report designates McNeese as a Tier One Regional University. The selective admissions university consists of six colleges and the Doré School of Graduate Studies. McNeese is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and all programs of study are accredited by their respective national boards.
McNeese has a student population of approximately 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students and a faculty of 300 and administrative staff of about 800. The main campus covers 121 acres with 68 building. In addition, the physical plant also includes the 503-acre McNeese Farm, a 65-acre Athletic Center which include Louis Bonnette Field at Cowboy Stadium, which seats 17,000 fans, Burton Coliseum, the Louisiana Environmental Research Center, and nearly 1,600 acres of donated farm property used for research, farming, and ranching. The University also operates a meat processing plant in nearby Lacassine (Jefferson Davis Parish).

The McNeese State University Police department provides many service-oriented functions to the McNeese community consisting of over 9,000 students, and a faculty and staff over 1,000.
The University Police department provides police, investigations, first-response and facilities protection services twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to all McNeese students, faculty, staff, and visitors. These services generally consist of 1st response emergency duties, crime response and investigation, as well as information, parking management, escort service and facilities protective services.
The University Police Officers are sworn commissioned police officers with the full range of police powers. They are empowered to make arrests in the matters concerning felonies and misdemeanors. The agency liaisons with the surrounding law enforcement agencies including the Louisiana State Police, Lake Charles Police Department, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office and Lake Charles Marshall's as well as locally available federal law enforcement agencies.
Police officers are responsible for a full range of public safety services, including crime reports, investigations, medical emergencies, fire emergencies, hazardous waste emergencies, traffic accidents, parking violations, enforcement of laws regulating consumption of alcoholic beverages, and the use of controlled substances, weapons and all other incident requiring police assistance.
University Police officers compile information, prepare reports and submit incident reports to the District Attorney's Office. The Department shares information on arrest and serious crimes with Lake Charles City Police, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Department, the District Attorney's office, the State Police, and other law enforcement agencies. Computer checks of warrants for wanted person can be conducted through computer link-up with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. The terminal provides access to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) which accesses the computer files of all Criminal Justice systems.
