Outerwall
Company Overview
Outerwall is on a mission to create a better everyday. As the company behind well-known Redbox® movie and video game rental kiosks, popular Coinstar® coin-counting kiosks and ecoATM® device-recycling kiosks, we’re pushing the walls of retail way out, into a new dimension — building businesses that make life simpler and better for consumers and retailers.
We’re on a mission to create a better everyday, and it starts with the kind of people we hire. If you’re a creative thinker—if you enjoy being part of a team—if you’re inspired by exciting challenges and you believe in giving back—we’d love to have you join us. In exchange, we offer a diverse, dynamic workplace full of opportunity, and a welcoming culture that blends a pioneering spirit with the resources of a well-established company.
Company History
It started with a simple idea. In 1989, Jens Molbak—a grad student on a budget— began thinking about that jar of spare change on his shelf. He thought, "There’s got to be a simple way to turn those coins into money I can spend more easily." So Jens and his team set to work on a solution. What began as a four-store installation of Coinstar® coin-counting kiosks in San Francisco has become an international network – with kiosks now in grocery stores, drug stores and other high-traffic locations across the U.S., Canada and abroad.
Along the way, we acquired Redbox. In 2002, a division of McDonald’s imagined an automated DVD rental kiosk to help drive traffic to its restaurants. Recognizing the alignment with our automated retail strategy, we began investing in Redbox® in 2005, when there were still less than 1,000 Redbox® kiosks. We acquired the rest of Redbox in 2009, and since then, it has grown to more than 43,000 kiosks across the U.S. and Canada, in grocery channels, convenience stores, drug stores and mass markets. Billions of discs have been rented to date, and more consumers are finding us everyday.
As technology and consumer preferences have evolved, so have our offerings. In 2010, we introduced Blu-ray Discs® at Redbox kiosks, and one year later, video games. In 2012, we partnered to create Redbox Instant™ by Verizon, which combines new release physical and curated digital content. We’re also engaging consumers in new ways, including the Redbox Text Club, which texts rewards and special offers to members’ phones.
Today Coinstar® kiosks offer consumers a breadth of choices, as well. They can transform coins and paper currency into gift cards, eCertificates, charity donations and more. It’s also possible to load or withdraw from a PayPal account. Not only is Coinstar delivering more choices, it's enabling consumers who prefer using cash to digitize funds for online purchases.
In 2013, we changed our name to Outerwall. As the company continued to create new automated retail experiences, we changed our name from Coinstar, Inc. to Outerwall Inc. Outerwall is a name that better reflects our vision and is broad enough to embrace our growing portfolio of products and services. Outerwall also defines where we want to be as a leader in automated retail – outside the expected and on the edge of what’s next.
We’ve only begun to tap the potential of automated retail. Building on our leadership position, we’re creating exciting new products and services.
We continue to imagine how we can make a better everyday for consumers delivering value, simplicity and convenience. We have multiple kiosk concepts in planning or prototype phases, and others in test markets throughout the country. Learn more about our New Ventures.
